Abstract:

Joe Russsell discusses his career as an airplane pilot before and after World War II: learning to fly in Idaho just after World War I, barnstorming in Idaho, eastern Washington and Oregon with his brother Basil "Bake" Russell, working as a commercial pilot for Transcontinental Air Transport (later became Trans World Airways) 1930-1932, barnstorming and working as a salesman for Lincoln Aircraft and Mono Aircraft in the Midwest, with some references to California; becoming a pilot on Cía. de Aviación Faucett, Peru, in 1936, including comments on the equipment used by the firm, flying conditions and regulations, company policies, salaries and benefits; returning to the United States and serving as a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II; returning to Faucett, 1945-1949.

Patrick Joseph Russell, known by personal preference as Joe Russell, was born in Payette, Idaho, Jan. 4, 1901, and died in Santa Rosa, Calif., Jan. 14, 1982; following his professional flying career, Joe Russell worked as an inspector for Boeing Consolidated in Seattle, 1949-1950, and as a mechanic for United Airlines, San Francisco, until his retirement in 1966. He continued to fly privately during that time.
